Hortaleza Madrid: schools, family facilities and after-school support

Hortaleza is a whole district, not a single school neighbourhood. From Pinar del Rey and Canillas to Piovera and Valdefuentes, the right school and afternoon routine depends on where your family actually lives.

Start with the district, not a postcode

Madrid City Council identifies six administrative neighbourhoods in Hortaleza: Pinar del Rey, Canillas, Valdefuentes, Apóstol Santiago, Piovera and Palomas. Conde de Orgaz is a commonly used residential name rather than one of those six administrative units. When searching for colegios Hortaleza, narrow the results to a school address and the child's age group.

A useful public-school starting point

The City Council's Pinar del Rey resource map lists CEIP Dionisio Ridruejo, Filósofo Séneca, Pablo Picasso, Pinar del Rey and San Miguel, as well as secondary schools including IES Gabriel García Márquez and Rosa Chacel. This is a starting directory, not a recommendation: check current catchment, admissions and provision through the education authorities.

Where international-school searches overlap

Families often search the district name while considering a specific campus. Hastings School publishes its Sobradiel Early Years and Primary campus in the area; Montessori Conde de Orgaz and Maristas San José del Parque serve families around Piovera. Different curricula and school stages mean the school profile and official website are more useful than a broad 'best schools in Hortaleza' list.

Libraries, workshops and somewhere to study

The district has a network of municipal cultural centres. Centro Cultural Hortaleza is on Calle Santa Virgilia 15 and has a reading/study room; the City Council also lists centres at Carril del Conde, Federico Chueca and Huerta de la Salud. These are practical places to check for public activities and workshops, although programmes change through the year.

A realistic weekly plan

Hortaleza is large enough that an after-school journey can be very different from one neighbourhood to the next. Check school dismissal times, public transport and whether an activity leaves room for play and rest. If a child needs academic help, establish whether the difficulty is subject knowledge, reading in English or the routine of getting started.

English-speaking homework help in the wider area

The Afternoon Academy is based at Calle Asura 40, Arturo Soria, outside some parts of Hortaleza. It offers independent English-speaking academic support for children aged 4–12, including homework, literacy and maths confidence. Families should check travel practicality and available sessions before making a commitment.
